The Vancouver City Council voted to ban plastic straws from April 2020 and ban plastic bags from New Year's Day in 2021. This is the first Canadian city to implement such a broad plastics ban.
According to Reuters, Vancouver's move is in response to many countries' current calls to reduce plastic pollution in order to reduce the use of plastic bags and other disposable plastic products. Montreal, another major Canadian city, has banned certain types of plastic bags in 2018.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced in June 2019 that it plans to ban certain disposable plastic products, such as straws, plastic bags and plastic tableware, in early 2021.
The Vancouver municipal government said that plastic bags and straws each account for 3% of the local beachside trash each year. According to a study commissioned by the government in early 2019, nearly 90% of Canada's plastic products are eventually buried or disposed of in the environment.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) pointed out that after the implementation of the plastic bag ban, merchants can provide paper bags instead. The first year will cost 15 cents (approximately RMB 8 cents) per paper bag and will increase to 25 cents (approximately) (RMB 1.3 yuan).
