Plastic straws aren't biodegradable, so they end up floating around in the ocean, which is dangerous for marine life there.
Harriet Spark from 1millionwomen.com reported that, "Avid scuba diver Kasey Turner was snorkeling after work recently at a popular dive site in Manly, Australia. In the area she found 319 straws on a single 20-minute snorkel. 24 hours later Kasey went back and did another and found 294 in the exact same place."
1 It is mind-boggling to think about how many straws end up in just that spot every day.
In 2012, Miami Beach actually banned hotels from giving out straws, because too many ended up the ocean
2. In London, there are several anti-straw campaigns, all trying to convince consumers that plastic straws are unnecessary for drinking, and to be informed about their options. A UK based group called Straw Wars3 is petitioning bars and restaurants to stop using plastic straws, or only provide them when requested. So far, 160 establishments around the world have joined the cause.
Instead of using plastic straws, opt for eco-friendly paper straws.
That way, drinks are still fun to sip, but turtles our beautiful Earth and other marine creatures aren't being put at risk.
Paper straws are just as functional as plastic straws, but are completely biodegradable and eco-friendly. If paper straws are in the right conditions, they can break down within 180 days. It's a much better alternative to plastic, which never completely break down.
When we all work to make the earth a little cleaner, we are making the world better for the future.
